"The Titanic" Facts and Figures

In our last class we learnt more facts about the “Titanic.”

First of all you told me that you had seen the film. And most of you liked it. I must admit that I found it quite boring and  rather long.

We practised questions and answers so as to find out more about the ship. And we also did a listening.

Can you answer these questions?

         ·            How long was the “Titanic”?
         ·            How heavy was it?
         ·            How many passengers were travelling first class?
         ·            How many passengers were there in third class?
         ·            How many people made up ( =were there)the crew?
         ·            How many boats were there?
         ·            Why were there so few boats?

We asked questions to find out (=discover) what certain figures referred to.

·            What does “272m. 39cm.” refer to? It was the length of the “Titanic.”

·            What does number 20 refer to? It was the number of lifeboats that there were on the ship
etc.

And we also made a list with eight things we had done the previous day.
Then we had to find at least one person in the group who had done the same things as us.

Pilar could hardly find a couple of people who had done one or two of the things she had done.
Alejandro found one person for each one of the activities. Well done!

And to finish the class we listened to a story that we had to complete with our own ideas. It started like this:

“It was a cold dark night...

So, I hope you didn’t forget to write your stories with the facts you invented (=made up).Because we will vote for the best story and that will be our 10th Game. Good luck with your stories!

"Is it raining?" "Yes, it's raining men! Hallelujah!"

Thursday 14th

Hi guys! How are you doing?

Today  we talked about transport. We role played a dialogue asking for information about trains or buses.
We learnt to use the verbs get on/off, get in / out, properly.
Look Out:

Get in /(into)  - Get out /out of are used with  car, taxi, van and helicopter.
Get off / Get on – are used with the rest, i.e. bus, train, tube, plane, boat, bike etc.

Homework:  Write a short composition telling me what your favourite means of transport is and why. (cheaper, more convenient, the fastest, the most comfortable etc.) Use comparative and superlative adjs.

We learnt some “slang” used in songs.

You told me the meaning of these words:
Gonna                    going to
Gotta                      have got to
Wanna                   want to
‘cause /’cos            because
ain’t                        isn’t / aren’t and it’s also been used as haven’t or hasn’t

Cool, isn’t it? But remember that this is slang and it isn’t used in formal contexts. It isn’t proper English. So, use it only when you are with friends!

Another meaning of “cool” is: cold, but not very cold. And now, let’s talk about the weather.
We did a word square on weather words. You were very good and had almost all of them.
We listened to the song “It’s Raining Men” by The Weather Girls and also the version by Gery  Halliwell.

Which of the two versions do you prefer?

Game : finding words in the word square and guessing the meaning of words from the song lyrics.
