Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Thursday 19th

Our last day of class for this year!

So, we decided to see a film. Elena had already seen it but I guess she didn’t see it in English, so it was a good practice.

The film is called “In Good Company” and it stars Dennis Quaid, Scarlett Johansson and Topher Grace.

It is a comedy. It’s set in the world of business and globalization.

We learnt some vocabulary:

A takeover / or the verb to take over: when a company buys another one.
To dismiss / make redundant/ to be fired: when somebody loses her /his job.
Do you remember what pfg stands for? Pretty F--- Good

Our Favourite Photos

Thursday 12th

Hi again!

Today Laura was absent.
But we found out (=discovered) why David didn’t come last class…
He went away (travelled) for the weekend. The long weekend.
And, guess what! He travelled to Dublin. And he visited Trinity college! How lucky!

It seems Pilar wasn’t so lucky. She came to class in clutches!  (kind of sticks to help you walk when you have broken a leg or sprained an ankle) It seems she had a sprained (damaged, not broken) playing basketball. Yes, playing basketball. It wasn’t a gymnastics injury! (hurt, damaged)

In spite of all this news, we took advantage of the class and worked a lot.

Following with the heading “It’s history,” we read a short biography on Nelson Mandela, who died last week.

We talked about important people in our lives.

We did a couple of listening comprehension exercises. One of them, about an awful holiday and the second one about famous photos. We described those photos.

The “Watergate scandal” August 9th 1974.
The knocking down of the Berlin wall, 1989.
And The Beatles composing a song in a hotel room in Paris. 1964.

You told me about some photos you like and why. But we’re going to continue talking about pictures on Thursday, so, don’t forget to bring a photo you like. You’ll have to describe it and tell us why you like it.

I’ll be looking forward to hear about those photos. See you on Thursday.
Besides, we are having the result of our games competition.

Tell me about your timeline...

Nelson Mandela - listening

Hello boy and girls!!!

This is a long weekend. And for David and Pilar it'll be even longer because they took Thursday off!!!

We read about what happened to Mr Trindle on a dark winter night, while he was driving home alone on a small country road...

By the way, what does UFO stand for?  Yes, Unidentified Flying Object

We talked about events in our lives and life experiences.

Alejandro's team won a handball trophy.
Elena went canyoning, which is quite dangerous. She's an adventurous girl!
Laura found a gold ring.
And it seems that Andrea isn't very lucky because she has had several accidents! In fact, she's lucky because none of them was really serious.

We draw our timeline. And we made up Robert's timeline. Laura left before we could finish but this was the result:

was born
parents die
move to Toronto
hockey
team
meet girlfriend
start university
get engaged

1993
1999
2003
2005
2007
2011
2012

Split up/ go to London / meet new girl
go skydiving /accident / die
January 2013
November 2013

Could you tell me Robert’s biography following the above timeline?

(I’d appreciate it if you could do it for homework.)

But the best thing was… I beat you!!! I was the winner playing “Stop”!!!!

"Two Famous First" - Alibi

November 27th

Hi guys!!!

So, only two of you had time for writing the story beginning with the sentence, “It  was a cold, dark night…”

Two extra points for those who did it! And two more for Laura because she was able to improvise a story in a short time!

We talked about two famous “firsts”.

The first woman to fly across the Atlantic and the first man in space.
We found out about their lives by making questions and answers to the group who had read the other famous person information.

We practised pronunciation of regular verbs in the past. Keep practising the sound /t/, /d/ and /ɪd/.
Remember not to pronounce “e” because it sounds awful!!!

“e” is only pronounced after “t” or “d” and it’s pronounced  /ɪd/

We revised the use and structure of past simple and past continuous.

Past simple: completed, finished actions in the past.
Past continuous: an action in progress at a certain point in the past.

What did you do last Saturday?
What were you doing yesterday between 9a.m. and 12 a.m.?

It seems that Andrea and Alejandro didn’t plan a good alibi, and our police officers concluded that they were the bank robbers!!!
