Sports, Rules & Balderdash!

Thursday 5th

Hi everybody!

(Except David and Óscar who didn’t attend to class. Yeah! I know…exams!)

First you made your presentations on sports, mentioning some basic rules.
Alejandro talked about handball – what did you expect? He’s been playing handball for quite some time! Pilar surprised us talking about boxing! We expected her to talk about gymnastics – the sport she does. And how could we not mention FOOTBALL? Jorge told us about football! And Andrea didn’t talk about any sport because she is a couch potato (she doesn’t practise any sport but lying on the sofa watching TV… or does she?)

We went on talking about rules. We had to guess if the rules were true or false.
Did you know that …

·         In Italy if you give flowers you should give them in odd numbers, e.g. 1,3,5,7 etc.? It’s bad luck if you give, for example, two flowers.
·         In Singapore, you mustn’t eat chewing gum. It’s against the law.
·         Of course! In Scotland, boys don’t have to wear kilts at school!
·         In Australia, women mustn’t sit on the top floor of a bus, only downstairs.
·         In Samoa, it is against the law for a man to forget her wife’s birthday!
And so on…

We read about useful tips for tourists to the UK.

·         You should always carry an umbrella. (Advice, recommendation)
·         You must drive on the left. (Obligation)
·         You don’t have to pay to visit most museums and art galleries. Entrance is usually free. (No necessity)
·         You mustn’t smoke in public buildings. It’s forbidden. (Prohibition)

We learnt words related to mobile phones with a guessing game.

·         When you send a message to somebody, you t - - - them.
·         The line is b- - - or e- - - - - -, when you phone somebody and they are already talking.
·         If you call somebody and their mobile isn’t on, you can leave a m- - - - -on their v- - - - m- - -.
·         If you want to dial a number quickly, you can use sp- - - dialling.
·         If you phone somebody and they don’t answer, you can c- - - b- - - later.

And we ended the class playing ‘Boulder dash’, a board game.
